I gather there's supposed to be a picture on top? It's not showing up.

Yikes. It's showing up for me on two computers so I have no idea what's going on.

Concert review: Adam Lambert shows range, maybe not longevity

Glam-rock god Adam Lambert plays it up to nearly sold-out crowd.

How Adam Lambert's career will ultimately play out is an open question. The "American Idol" season eight star can sing, no doubt about it. He brings strong stage persona, a professional backing band, sharp and flexible dancers and an at-times intense stage show.

His songs, though, are another matter. To this point, he hasn't got an original that matches what he is able to do onstage -- not that it mattered even a little to an audience of 1,987 in the 2,100-capacity Roanoke Performing Arts Theatre on Thursday night.

To this nearly sold-out crowd, the man was a glam-rock god, and their cheers were sometimes louder than Lambert and his four-piece band.

This crowd, seemingly a cross-section of the Roanoke Valley's more open-minded "American Idol" fans, was amped well before Lambert got started. Warmed up well enough by Lambert's fellow "Idol," Allison Iraheta, many stood and danced at intermission, singing along with Journey and Michael Jackson songs.

Nothing from Lambert's hour-long set hinted at the staying power of "Don't Stop Believin' " or "Billie Jean," but his voice -- from warbles to screams and many notes in-between -- elevated the mainstream pop, rock and disco of his debut album, "For Your Entertainment."

And the music was pretty fun, with little hints of menace, as in set openers "Voodoo" and "Down the Rabbit Hole," during which Lambert sported a purple top hat with long feathers and a furry-shouldered, long jacket.

"Sleepwalker," "Strut" and "Aftermath" allowed for totally in-control vocal gymnastics, but far more inventive was "Ring of Fire," the old Johnny Cash hit that Lambert recast with a Middle Eastern melody and his own deft, gliding vocal phrasing.

If he can come up with originals that can match that level of innovation, he might have a long and productive career. If not, there's always Las Vegas.

Opener Iraheta fronted a fairly rocking three-piece act that included an all-female bass/drums battery. Her voice was strong but a little flat on too many high notes -- a little pitchy, dawg.

At other times, she sounded beautiful, but she dared not reach for the high notes on her cover of Pat Benatar's "Heartbreaker."

I assume with more time and a better sense of musical direction, Adam will have better material to work with on his next album.
