So many thanks to argeneau (who made this post) and to drcat, taxcha, esren8, etharei, and nolechica, who all reached out to help when I was gracelessly flailing. I underestimated this I'm afraid, and you were all amazing and generous. I'm deleting the thread not cover my tracks, but just so it won't detract from the post.

Idol worship for glam god Adam Lambert

(pic)

Teenage girls love Adam Lambert. So do grandmothers. And drag queens. And middle-aged women. And 12-year-old boys who came with their entire family.

Friday night’s show at South Shore Music Circus explained why.

The “American Idol” runner-up delivered a maxed-out, consummate performance that suggested he’ll be playing a venue three times as large next time he comes around. And he managed to do what Aretha Franklin could not a few weeks prior: Sell out the venue and create a frenzy in the process.

A Glambert appearance isn’t just a performance, it’s a phenomenon of sorts. Fans of all shapes and sizes - mind-bogglingly so - come to witness not just Lambert’s impressive vocal histrionics, but the glitzy fever that comes along with it. In terms of screams alone, Lambert owned the venue from the moment he appeared at tent’s edge wearing a purple fur coat and feathered top hat.

His 70-minute set, which felt like it could have lasted comfortably for another half hour, was a dazzling mix of punk, disco, funk, synthpop and rock - mixed with feathers, leather and asymmetrical haircuts.

Drawing mostly from Lambert’s debut album, “For Your Entertainment,” the show took some twists and turns, from the disco dark tones of the opener “Voodoo,” which led to “Down the Rabbit Hole” and “Fever,” to the hyper-pop of “If I Had You” and the meditative “Streetwalker.”

Mid-set, Lambert took to a stool for a stripped-down “Whataya Want From Me,” an acoustic “Aftermath,” and a piano-assisted “Soaked,” by far the night’s best display of vocal power.

In between strutting around the stage (during “Strut,” for example) Lambert joined his dancers in choreography, eliciting shrieks every time he popped a hip or shoulder.

Guitar-wielding Orianthi displayed some impressive guitar licks and abrasive pop-rock on “According to Him” and “Shut Up and Kiss Me.” Even more impressive was fellow “American Idol” alum Allison Iraheta, who channeled a Janis Joplin-esque sound to open the show.

Adam Lambert, with Allison Iraheta and Orianthi. At South Shore Music Circus, Cohasset, last night.

Just got back from this! :DDD

He seemed much more "on" and excited than yesterday imho... maybe because it wasn't as crazy hot inside this tent. Don't know if I can remember many details, though he sounded wonderful both shows. I think he might have gone for more glory notes tonight. Oh, I think he had some lyric confusion on IIHY lol.

Fun moments (all from memory so details could be wrong):
Joked about taking motion sickness pills for the stage near the beginning. When Brooke held a pose during their dance he was like "is this yoga?" Also someone threw a bra onstage at some point (pink and beige) and he was not impressed with its cheapness/boringness ("is this from TJMaxx?") and threw it back into the crowd ("aw, you know I'm just kidding though").

Also, because the venue is this rotating stage theater-in-the-round dealie, performers have to enter and exit from one of the public doorways and walk down the aisles. After Orianthi I was walking around and noticed a crowd gathered--it was people waiting along the short pathway between the dressing room building and the tent doorway. There was quite a mix of people, even some young boys, and I was next to a guy who was a fan (he'd bought Take One as well as FYE and loved it lol).

Btw, an interesting wrinkle for these tent venues is that Adam starts the show in the doorway each time, then he walks down the aisle to the stage. I think he runs up that aisle too for costume changes, so I guess if you were seated close by that aisle you got a special, really ultra-close view. No projection screens, but omg my seats were so close. And if you'd ever had the urge to see the back of outfits or know what certain dances looked like from the back/side, this was your chance.

A seat next to me was empty for a lot of the time, but later a guy came who was realllly excited for Adam (and who'd had probably had a few). "Can you believe you're about 30 feet from Adam Lambert? This won't happen again! Tell your children one day you saw the next Elvis! He's going to be huge." lol what to say? He also wanted to dance to WWFM. He left again, I think to try to watch closer in the aisles again, which a few were doing.

All in all, a great night :D

I'm glad you had a great night!

I haven't watched the vids from these tents venue yet and I wonder how the rotating stage works. Does the stage keep rotating slowly all the time or rotate on and off?
(Reply) (Parent) (Thread) (Link)
[identity profile] cellia.livejournal.com on August 21st, 2010 02:41 pm (UTC)
I think it really did rotate the whole time, but at a slow speed so it wasn't impossible for the dancers or anything.

[identity profile] elevatordrops.livejournal.com on August 21st, 2010 05:04 pm (UTC)
The venue says it moves continuously, but I think it was on and off, with several minute stretches of no movement. It was fun seeing all angles, and especially getting a good look at Cam and LP. But I think it was more than a little distracting for the band & the dancers and also the stage was too cramped for the whole song and dance routine.

Huh. THAT would make sense...

See I went Friday night and watching videos after I was like - He seems off. Like fabulous glitter awesome as usual but NOW I'm watching last nights and MUCH more on.

Maybe he did get sick from the stage rotating. He only did one encore song and took FOREVER to get out of the place to the busses (at least two hours) so that would make complete sense...

Aw poor baby :(

Glad you had fun though! :)

Yeah, I can't pinpoint anything wrong with the 1st MA show at Cape Cod, but it seemed just less high-energy and more professional rote than the 2nd at South Shore.

20th Century Boy was the only encore song at both though.

Lambert delivers more color than creativity

COHASSET — Like a certain other “American Idol’’ runner-up, Adam Lambert has a voice of profound technical ability and a fan base driven by a fervent devotion that even the person who actually won couldn’t match. But where Clay Aiken spent the first few years of his career letting his fans dictate his image, Lambert is letting it all hang out right from the start. At the South Shore Music Circus on Friday, he was confident and flamboyant.

Maybe “flamboyant’’ doesn’t quite cut it. He came out in full plumage, almost literally, with a top hat wrapped in purple fishnets and a fistful of feathers, a fringed purple jacket, and a smear of glitter running from his left eye to behind his ear. He would have been hard to miss even from the farthest reaches of an arena, which the performance seemed designed for.

That may have been part of the problem. Lambert delivered an arena-scaled show — both visually (with lasers, costume changes, and four dancers) and sonically — in a cozy, in-the-round setting. The ambition was admirable, but Lambert was so focused on the nonexistent bleachers that he often shot right past the audience. The same problem plagued the booming sound mix, which pulverized everything into indistinctness.

Lambert was also poorly served by musical director and guitarist Monte Pittman, whose mission seemed to be to saddle the singer with a charmlessly glum Evanescence tribute band. Even songs that should have been gimmes failed to sparkle, such as a cover of “20th Century Boy’’ that was more Sammy Hagar than T. Rex.

With songs like the churning “Sure Fire Winners’’ and the flavorless “Music Again,’’ Lambert’s material suffered the same dreary lack of consequence that all “Idol’’ contestants face on their debuts, but a few rays of light cracked through. “Fever’’ reconfigured the groove from David Bowie’s “Fashion’’ into a Scissor Sisters club-pop jam. Backed only by keyboardist Camila Grey, the quasi-operatic “Soaked’’ found Lambert in Josh Groban/Andrea Bocelli mode, but in the absence of his lauded version of Tears For Fears’ “Mad World,’’ it was an effective cool down.

But there was a lot about Lambert’s performance, which came across like a high-school talent show’s idea of edgy glam, complete with learn-to-love-yourself messages. Underneath the hard guitars of the set-closing (and thrown-bra-inspiring) “If I Had You,’’ it was possible to hear the dance remix begging to break free. Lambert might possess an uncommon vocal ability, but he still hasn’t quite hit on how best to use it.

Opener (and Lambert’s “Idol’’ season-mate) Allison Iraheta’s music was just like her hair: a multicolored riot but predominantly Pink, though any snarl in her voice and her songs was all but diluted by the muddle of her sound mix. She was followed by Orianthi, whose apparent need to fit as many notes as possible between lyrics made her come off like the Lambert of guitar shredders, all confident technical mastery accomplishing little.
