Some pics of the venue. It appears to be a barn, not an abattoir.

Might have been a crappy venue, but a good show.

Fans turn out to see American Idol star Lambert perform

Sade Ward faced four hours of driving from Midland and back to see her favorite singer perform live Wednesday night in Lubbock.

Ward, a Texas Tech student with a petroleum engineering internship in Midland, said she was willing to make the late-night drive back to an early morning class just so she could hear “Whataya Want From Me?” and every other Adam Lambert song she could think of.

“Adam’s worth it,” she said.

Lambert, who rose to stardom as a performer after finishing second on American Idol in 2009, performed for an audience of more than 1,000 people Wednesday evening at the Lone Star Events Center.

Ward, a senior petroleum engineering major from Trinidad and Tabago, said Lambert’s concert would be her first concert and she had high expectations of the performance.

But because he’s openly gay, she said, she was surprised to see a line of people several hundred yards long in front of the events center waiting to see Lambert.

She had to go to the concert alone because some of her friends and acquaintances seemed uneasy watching Lambert.

“They’re all anti-Adam and I can’t understand why?” Ward said. “I like that he’s himself. I guess there’s just some things Americans are ready for and some things they’re not.”

The crowd at the event center, however, seemed eager to watch Lambert. They let out a loud cheer when opening act Allison Iraheta, who finished in fourth place on American Idol in 2009, asked the audience if they were excited to see the next act.

Ward said she became an instant fan of Lambert’s when she saw him on American Idol.

“I just think he’s awesome,” she said. “I know he should have won American Idol.”

Lambert fan Jim Nance of Amarillo said he didn’t think it made a difference how the singer ranked on American Idol’s eighth season.

“He would have been this big even if he’d come in 10th,” said Jim Nance. “He’s just a really good entertainer.”

His wife, Stacey Nance, credited her husband for introducing her to the television show and Lambert. Now, she said, she’s a die-hard fan who owns two of his CDs.

“I listen to him for at least two hours a day,” Stacey said. “He has an amazing voice.”

Also traveling to see Lambert were Gabriela Elizondo, her children and husband from Monterey, Mexico.

Elizondo said she was driving back to Monterey from a road trip in Miami when she learned Lambert would play in Lubbock.

“I really wanted to experience listening to him live,” she said.
