Hello Members!

Just wanted to give you a heads up that the mods have given me the go ahead to make some layout changes. I'll be adding a sidebar with links and a post for any extra links. Hopefully this will make it easier to find your way around Hoopla Magnet.
If you see any broken or missing links please let me know. Also feel free to ask questions or leave suggestions.

Having all the links is nice.

May I just mention that not everyone has a widescreen monitor? I am finding it very difficult to track the long lines in the comment pages, especially when needing to scroll to read them.

I will see if I can find instructions for viewing comments in the old/default style (assuming that is still an option, which given the changes lj has been making to things may or may not be the case) and will comment here with them if I do.

Thanks!
Ah good point about the widescreen monitors. This am I see the large photos are stretching the comment pages in the current news post to.
Okay great, thanks! I'll see what I can do to fix the problem as well.

Okay the photos in the news post are smaller now. I hope that helps some of the side scrolling issue.
Also if you are logged in when viewing the community see if clicking 'view journal in my style' [located in the navigation bar] helps.

Thank you -- that works much better for me.

I did experiment with the style=mine button, but I have a right-hand column in mine that put text over everything that extended to the right, making it even more awkward.

I looked at the FAQs, and there is one -- http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=186 -- that says that one can view a single page in a different style by adding ?usescheme=[stylename] (minus the square brackets, and with an & if there is already an expression with a ? in the url) but I haven't gotten it to work yet. The old LJ default was Horizon, and I tried it with that. I will keep poking at that particular issue (and submit a support ticket if it keeps on not working -- it's possible that's one of the bells& whistles they've disabled to keep things going during the ddos that's going on).

Of course, what I actually *want* is Dreamwidth's 'style=light' function, but that's not something LJ does.

I do like what you've done with the background and the color-scheme and all. It's very pretty. Thank you for your work on it!

You're welcome! Great to hear, thanks for the feedback.
Ah bummer about the style=mine button.

Oh good to know about FAQ 186. I did notice some problems with the flexible squares layout last week, they made some change and it messed up the text in the boxes. So who knows what they are up to, hope it's fixed soon.

A Dreamwidth style=light function would be great for LJ!

Thank you, glad you like it!

LJ does ?format=light though, which is similar to DW's light style. :)

Thank you! ?format=light works for me.

Rocketjava -- the way it works is to put ?format=light immediately after the .html part of the url (&format=light after a ?expression doesn't work) and refresh. Then it will load in a minimal formatting style, which it will remember for comment pages.

Thank you!!

I just went to the latest news post and I liked the page summary on the side bar. It's easier now to find anything new added since my last visit.

I come here often so I usually go straight to the last page of the current post to read something new. (Chrome remembers to open the last post I went to so once it opens, I press the "End" key (I'm on Windows) to go to the bottom of the page and click the link to the last page to start reading. It doesn't take much time but if anyone knows any shorter-cut to do this please let me know.) So I probably am missing reading all the replies (to others) that have been added to the previous pages after I moved on. Is there a way to show (a list of) recent replies (from any pages) on the side bar on the current page under the page summary?

You're welcome!

Glad you like the page summary, it does make it easier to find stuff. Using the subject bar like you did looks great! I know it's extra work but it's nice for quickly finding stuff.

I don't know of a latest comment function for LJ communities. There is one for your own journal: http://www.livejournal.com/tools/recent_comments.bml I'll take a look though in case I missed it. You can track whole entries or individual threads. It's the tack icon, click on it and you can have all the comments made sent to your LJ inbox and/or email.

Thank you!
I might try tracking the entries and reading them in my LJ inbox.

The tracking feature for entries is nice.

Adding ?view=flat to the end of the URL shows you all the comments in that post in chronological order, the newest on the last page.

Thank you! That's what I wanted!
I just added "?view=flat" to the URL of the last news post and on the last page I found something I missed yesterday.

I think I got it! Thank you!

So if I want to see if anything new added to the last news post (for example) on my smartphone I can bookmark the following URL

http://hooplamagnet.livejournal.com/123824.html?format=light&view=flat&page=999#comments

and keep refreshing the page, and replace the "123824.html" part when we switch to a new news post, right?

(or is there a better command/URL to do this?)

Yep, that's it. It's just that complicated. Or rather it's not all that complicated, but too bad LJ doesn't have buttons for all these functions and we have to type them in manually.

Also, as for reading on your phone, there's the mobile version of LJ at m.livejournal.com. Have you tried that? No clue how that works since I only ever use LJ on my computer, but FYI!

[identity profile] mmyy9.livejournal.com on December 2nd, 2011 01:04 am (UTC)
Thank you! I didn't know about the mobile version.

I tried it and the URL for the last page of the last news post was
http://m.livejournal.com/read/user/hooplamagnet/123824/comments/p52#comments
but I couldn't find a way to view the comments in chronological order. Maybe there isn't one?

It's easier to read the comments through but it lacks timestamps, etc. so I'll use both this one and the light option.

I also tried LiveJournal iPhone/Android apps but they didn't let me read comms.

There probably isn't a chronological view available in the mobile version. Sorry!

Thank you for confirming it. I want to make a new international radio post before the single is released worldwide and I need to learn how LJ works.

I was away most of the afternoon yesterday and when I came home and logged in to lj to read hoopla on my PC, all the new layout was gone (the layout is now back to the previous one to me). Is it just me?

No [livejournal.com profile] nolechica changed it back to the old layout.

Well on the current news post I saw someone say she likes the new layout, just an hour ago, but it's still not "just me" I guess?

Are we having the side bar back?

The layout change was announced but changing it back has never been so far as far as I know and people who weren't around while we had the new layout must be wondering what people up-thread are talking about.

I traced back [livejournal.com profile] nolechica's twitter feed to see what happened but all I could find was her referring to what I think is hooplamagnet as "so dead" and I always hate to see mods saying such a thing without even coming to the actual posts until it's their turns to make the new posts.

I don't know what the mods are planning to do with the layout but I thought the side bar was handy for people who actually post and read comments there, I thought it would save a lot of time for me.

I think the mods are trying to work with the old layout and maybe add a sidebar.
